The Army sergeant accused of shooting five fellow soldiers at Fort Stewart, Georgia, texted his aunt before the attack saying that “he loved everybody and that he’ll be in a better place because he was about to go and do something,” The New York Times reports.

Police said Sgt. Quornelius Radford, 28, an automated logistics sergeant from Jacksonville, Florida, used his personal handgun in Wednesday’s attack and would have injured more people had it not been for 1st Sgt. Aaron Turner, who tackled him and pinned him down, according to the Times.

“These American soldiers highlight exactly what the Army has meant to this country,” Army Secretary Daniel Driscoll said Thursday at a news conference where he introduced 1st Sgt. Joshua Arnold, who treated the wounded.
