Rep. Mike Lawler on Sunday denounced partisan redistricting, warning that gerrymandering has “broken” Congress and calling for sweeping reforms, including a nationwide ban on middecade map changes and the imposition of term limits for members of Congress.
“I think gerrymandering is fundamentally wrong, and it is at the heart of why Congress has been broken for so many years,” the New York Republican told CBS’ “Face the Nation.”
He noted that while more than 100 House districts were competitive three decades ago, just 35 seats were decided by five points or less in the last election cycle. “Roughly 400 members are not in competitive districts, focused primarily on primaries and not general elections,” the congressman said.
