California Gov. Gavin Newsom has proposed rolling back part of his expensive program to provide health coverage for illegal immigrants. One element of the plan would stop new enrollments.
The Hill reported that he move comes as the Medi-Cal program in California continues to face a budget deficit. Newsom approved a nearly $3 billion plan in April to shore up the program.
State Rep. Carl DeMaio, a Republican, posted in response that Newsom was bankrupting the program by “giving $10B in free healthcare to illegal immigrants — and there’s strong evidence he illegally tried to get federal Medicaid reimbursements.”
